И все же фильм местами захватывает, а его герой, носитель идеалистических воззрений – певец утопии, основанной на доброй воле людей всего мира, – прекрасно вписывается в великую американскую мечту, которая была самым мощным источником вдохновения для добрых картин Капры во все периоды его режиссерской карьеры. На самом же деле из этих декоративных виньеток постепенно вырастет целая архитектура, в которой Америка распознает немалую долю своих истин и тайных желаний. Человек-волк тонет вместе с Дракулой, превратившимся в летучую мышь, а в это время ассистент докторши поджигает Чудовище Франкенштейна.► Среди 34 полнометражных фильмов, сделанных комическим дуэтом Бада Эбботта и Лу Костелло с 1940 по 1956 гг., немало таких, где мишенями для насмешек служат персонажи голливудских фильмов, по большей части - фильмов фантастических. Хронологически Эбботт и Костелло встречают Франкенштейна - 1-й такой фильм. Принцип этой серии картин состоял в том, чтобы создавать пародии на великие фантастические творения студии «Universal», снятые с 1931 г., вкладывая при этом в работу не меньше стараний (особенно в гриме), используя, по возможности, те же декорации и тех же актеров, к которым, естественно, присоединялись 2 знаменитых болвана со своим привычным дуракавалянием. С точки зрения бюджета, пародия вовсе не казалась «бедным родственником» рядом с оригиналом.Этот фильм, открывающий цикл, задуман с широким размахом и пародирует 3 фильма сразу: Дракулу, Dracula Тода Браунинга с Белой Лугоши, Франкенштейна, Frankenstein Джеймса Уэйла (Гленн Стрейндж заменяет Бориса Карлоффа в роли Чудовища, как это уже случилось в Доме Франкенштейна, House of Frankenstein, Эрла К. Кентона) и Человека-волка, The Wolf Man, 1941 Джорджа Уэггнера с Лоном Чейни-мл. Цикл пользовался значительным успехом - особенно у детей. Простецкий и добродушный комизм Эбботта и Костелло здесь следует старой, проверенной схеме: из 2 героев только Лу становится свидетелем сверхъестественных явлений и, соответственно, пугается их. Его постоянные страхи встречают насмешки и презрительный скептицизм его партнера. В этих фильмах пугаться должен не зритель, а бурлескный персонаж, помещенный внутрь интриги. Появление этого промежуточного звена создает юмор и нейтрализует фантастичность сюжета, ничуть не вредя при этом его живописности. Актерскую работу Лугоши в этом фильме можно даже предпочесть его Дракуле образца 1931 г.N.В.
